Fläkt Woods is providing the ventilation solutions for one of the greatest engineering feats in the world, the €1.5 billion Route 8 highway project in Hong Kong.

Under the contract the company is supplying 3 immense fans for the 1.2km long Nam Wan tunnel, part of the ambitious 15 km Route 8 project. Everything about these axial flow fans is extreme; they measure 2.65 m in diameter, are powered by 900 kW motors and run at pressures of 3,800 pascals.

Because the fans will be used for smoke extraction and ventilation, testing is critical, and as part of the contract Fläkt Woods will run one of the fans continuously to self destruct, to prove their capability of withstanding temperatures of up to 400 oC for 1 hour.

The fans incorporate guide vanes for flow straightening to achieve maximum performance and will run at 993 rpm.

Nam Wan Tunnel
Is a 1.2 km twin-tube tunnel is on the southern part of the Tsing Yi to Cheung Sha Wan section, which consists of 7.6 km of dual three-lane highway. Apart from the tunnel, the major construction elements of the project include: West Tsing Yi Viaduct; East Tsing Yi Viaduct; Stonecutters Bridge; and Ngong Shuen Chau Viaduct.

Targeted for completion by 2008, Route 8 will link up busy container ports and the airport with the North East New Territories. It will also connect the Lantau Link to the West Kowloon Highway and provide much needed relief for other road networks and tunnels.

By 2010, more than 155 kilometres of road tunnels will have been built in China, and Fläkt Woods has been at the forefront of supplying the ventilation solutions to many of these projects.
