The world's largest cruise ship with a car deck, M/S Color Fantasy has started a daily service between Oslo, Norway and Kiel, Germany. Fläkt Woods provided a complete range of purpose built fans, ducting and air movement devices to give the perfect indoor climate and air quality throughout the ship.

M/S Color Fantasy started its daily service in December 2004. It is a massive vessel, measuring an impressive 223 metres long and 60 metres high. It has its own shopping arcade, casino, restaurants and spa, 16 decks and room for 2,750 passengers and 750 cars.

During the day-and-a-half voyage on the Color Fantasy, with its 996 cabins, passengers will be able to get a massage, spend time in "Aqualand," use a golf simulator, get their hair done, eat at a variety of restaurants or go to the cinema. The ship also has a conference capacity for 850 participants, with a fully equipped 1,600 m2 conference centre and a permanent 1,400 m2 exhibition area.

Color Line AS operates six international ferry lines between eight harbours in Norway, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The Norwegian company built its new vessel at Kværner Masa-Yards (now changing its name to Aker Finnyards) in Finland.

Focus on air handling
From the outset, designs focussed on customer comfort levels with one of the main areas of attention, the air movement system. Fläkt Woods company provided a complete range of purpose built fans, ducting and air movement devices to give the perfect indoor climate and air quality throughout the ship.

When the company secured the HVAC contract through ABB, Fläkt Woods selected the precise products to match with the differing specifications throughout the ship. Products were delivered from the various parts of the organisation, manufactured in factories in Finland, Sweden and the UK.

These included air handling units, with about 60 units from the Company’s EMAA and EU range delivered to the shipyard. The bespoke EMAA air handling unit is a compact product that has been developed exclusively for the needs of the modern cruise liner, for the supply and extract of air with a rotating heat exchanger. It has had to undergo rigorous sea trials in order to fulfil particularly demanding requirements for sound levels.

The Company has also integrated every air handling unit with an automation and control system. HACS (HVAC automation central system) controls air flow, temperature, pressure, operating time, and position of dampers easily with one console.

As part of the contract a range of centrifugal (GT) and axial fans (JM), were delivered in varying diameters. Almost 50 of these fans are on-board today and operate virtually unheard (even at very low frequencies, the most demanding cycle). Additionally they have high efficiency and reliability, which contributes to lower operating costs and minimal maintenance.

In total about 80 km of ducting was installed as well as about 150,000 fittings. The pre-insulated ducts and fittings are used for supply air throughout the ship. Pre-insulated fittings are new generation products. They have double sealing which means extra tight ductwork ensuring that fresh, cooled air is distributed to the places where it is needed. The fittings have specialised air insulation providing light construction as well as condense free and high thermal performance.

Thousands of air terminal devices have also been delivered to Color Fantasy. Fläkt Woods’ cabin units and air valves guarantee a total high class indoor air climate.

Fläkt started manufacturing ventilation products in Sweden in 1920 and the first products for marine applications were delivered to a passenger ship in 1937. Woods started making fans almost 100 years ago and is a respected leader in the field of axial flow fans. The merger of the two companies created a market leader within Marine HVAC with a wide range of quality products within the marine sector.
