Fläkt Woods has won its largest Jet Thrust Fan order in Germany, supplying car park ventilation solutions for a new €290 million themed shopping and leisure centre on the Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

Known as the Alexa, the project will have 180 shop units, including 17 restaurants and a total floor area of the 54,000 m². It will feature underground parking on three levels, with 1,600 spaces and loading bays.

Fläkt Woods is providing expertise as well as products. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling/analysis, the car parks team can study the airflow behaviour under normal running conditions. Additionally, fire modelling has been requested by the customer in order to provide fire fighter access to the seat of any potential fire, clear of smoke.

The location of the Jet Thrust Fans will ensure good distribution of air throughout the car park to prevent dead spots for pollution and smoke control emergency ventilation.

A total of 140 Jet Thrust Fans will be installed, of which 131 will be 400mm diameters and the remaining 9 will have 315mm diameters (these will be used in an area with low ceiling height). All the fans will come with silencers as standard.

Level 1 of the car park has been divided three fire zones, and Levels 2 and 3 have four fire zones. These are separated by full height walls and fire doors that come down in the boundaries of the zone in which the fire has been detected (including the ramps).

Why Jet Thrust Fans in car parks?

Jet Thrust Fans are ideal for use in car parks as they eliminate distribution ductwork, which is needed for conventional ventilation systems. Without ductwork, system resistance can be significantly reduced, which means fan speed and noise levels can be a lot lower. There is also an increase in overall space and a more aesthetically pleasing look. The use of detection/control equipment will contribute to considerable savings in running costs.

Alexa Shopping and Leisure Centre

Planned to open for Spring 2007, the design of Alexa reflects the atmosphere of the golden twenties. This ambience will be
supported by its architecture, unique designs and Art Deco elements have been incorporated in the individual leisure areas, themed; Metropolis, Dance, Music and Light as well as in the Food Court.

Alexa is directly connected to Grunerstrasse, one of Berlin’s main arterial roads and only a few minutes away from Alexanderplatz, Berlin’s busiest city centre commuter railway station as well as the underground and rapid-transit railway station Jannowitzbrücke.

Commenting on the Alexa contract, Paul Wenden, Business Development Director for Fläkt Woods said: “This is a significant contract for us in terms of value and the scope of the specialist knowledge required. Its location in Germany is evidence that our reputation has spread throughout Europe and we are seen as the number one Company to provide these expert solutions”.
