Fläkt Woods has delivered specialist air handling units fitted with heat recovery and meeting the exacting requirements of a prestigious new office building currently rising out of the heart of the Belgian city of Leuven.

The new 43000m² building is located in the famed Martyr Square, where its modern design is a striking contrast with the neo-classical buildings bordering the remainder of the square it overlooks. With a completely transparent 5m high glass base, supporting the 5 new buildings, the contemporary structure connects directly to the train station.

Interbuild, the contractor on the project, specified Fläkt Woods EU air handing units as they meet the precise needs of the contract - total flexibility - allowing different sizes and functions to be combined to meet virtually any air handling requirement.

Designed for customers with high demand on quality and energy efficiency, the 10 EU units have been optimised for thermal and acoustic requirements. They have also been fitted with hygroscopic thermal wheels for energy efficiency.

The wheels are capable of transferring sensible, as well as latent energy, and have the advantage being able to conveying moisture. This means that in winter they will add humidity to the supply air and in summer, will remove moisture away from the supply side. Using these wheels alone can reduce the latent load on a chiller, saving energy and reducing running costs.

A range of air terminal devices is also being supplied, which are up to 9dBA quieter than most other mixing systems They also simplify installation as there is no need to remove ceiling tiles during commissioning.

The new building

A façade of granite and glass will give each building a distinctive look and a different colour - red, white, green, black and yellow with a total length of 300m and width of 30m.

Under its glass base, an enormous underground car park is being constructed with a 29 935m² floor area for 700 cars Other parking floors of 6 000m² will house the 5,000 bicycles used by the huge numbers of students that take the train every week to the famous student City.

The middle buildings B & C will become the new offices for KBC Bank. The City of Leuven will house its administration in building A, while buildings D & E will be leased for rent.
