Fläkt Woods has received orders valued at over £ 500,000 for fans to ventilate Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 building.
The fans, which are being manufactured in the UK, will be used to provide general venting solutions, stair pressurisation, roof venting and smoke control at Terminal 5.
In excess of 200 of the Company’s renowned JM fans have been ordered by ventilation specialists Hotchkiss. A variety of different diameter high temperature fans are being delivered, ranging from 500 mm to 1,400 mm in width, and capable of withstanding temperatures of 300 oC for 2 hours.

The new main terminal building offers a challenge on an enormous scale for building services, and Fläkt Woods has had to calculate the requirements for an interior area that could accommodate around 50 football pitches. In addition, the large open spaces and extensive use of glazing to control noise pollution, mean that the fans have to be extremely efficient and effective at venting, within strict acoustic parameters.
As well as providing employees with a safe and quality environment, the provision of good quality air supply is vital for the anticipated 30 million additional passengers that the Terminal will cater for.
Phase two, due for completion in 2011, provides a second satellite building to the T5 campus. Terminal 5 will be the largest single span building in the UK, incorporating 18,000 tonnes of steelwork and 5,000 tonnes of roofing materials.
