Ventilation for the Darkest Secrets

Fläkt Woods has won a substantial contract to supply ventilation fans for a labyrinth of tunnels in Italy that form part of experiments to understand the earths matter.

The contract is one of the largest single tunnelling orders for JM Axijet jet fans, and includes over 150 Axijet fans of 1 metre diameter, that are capable of withstanding temperature of 400o C for 2 hours.

Italian engineers have excavated over 3.3 km of underground galleries, tunnels and caverns located at between 55 and 122 metres at the site at Gran Sasso 120 km north-west of Rome.

The Gran Sasso tunnel, 10.4 km long and 120 km north-west of Rome.

It’s here at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in three experimental halls beside the 10.4-km long Gran Sasso Tunnel, that research into particle and nuclear astrophysics are being conducted, deep underground, on topics that include the study of matter from the sun, dark matter and rare kinds of nuclear decay.

The JM Axijet jet fan is ideally suited to tunnel venting. It is designed for high efficiency and thrust, and low installed noise levels, giving equal airflow and thrust in each direction, for ventilation as well as removal of pollution and smoke.
