Fläkt Woods is working on a contract in Malaysia to supply large ventilation fans for an unusual tunnel/water alleviation project, known as SMART.
The Company will ship 80 of its renowned JM Axijet truly reversible jet fans to Kuala Lumpur under a contract valued at over €900,000. SMART (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel) is a unique engineering feat currently under construction to address two major issues in the Capital; flooding and traffic congestion.
Measuring 9.7 km in length, the new tunnel will be the longest in Malaysia and will run underneath the city, between two huge ponds. A central 3km stretch on three levels, will become a motorway helping to reduce traffic congestion in the City centre. The jet fans will be installed in this middle section, on the upper level, providing a critical role to ventilate and provide emergency smoke extraction.
What is really unique about the scheme is that as well as the motorway, it will divert storm water away from the city centre on the lowest level, And when there is a very large downpour, the tunnel operators will be able to close off the road, open the sluice gates and let the entire tunnel (which is the height of a 4-storey building) be used as a massive stormwater tunnel.
