Fläkt Woods has delivered its largest chiller unit in the UK, for the North Wales Theatre project in Llandudno, Wales.

North Wales Theatre project

The Theatre and Conference Centre, now known as Venue Cymru, has undergone a £10.7m enhancement project, which involved refurbishment of the existing foyer, restaurant and box office areas and an extension to the conference centre with additional meeting rooms and an arena space. It is the largest conference venue in North Wales and boasts a 1,500-seat auditorium in the theatre, a main hall able to cater for 1,000 in the conference centre and an arena able to cater for up to 2,500.

Flakt Woods supplied a model KCCD – 400 from the new Climaflakt range, it included twin single screw compressors and specially designed shell and tube evaporator for refrigerant, and has a cooling capacity of 800 kw.

The new ClimaFläkt Chiller installed in Llandudno, the largest in the UK.

The unit has new microprocessor control and electronic expansion valves which continually adapt the chiller operating parameters to the load conditions of the system in which it is installed, reducing energy consumption and noise while the working life of the parts increases. The unit was also supplied complete with twin pumps, expansion and buffer vessels for a total solution along with acrylic coated coils for coastal application.

This new Climaflakt range of chillers reinforces Flakt Woods’ reputation for high quality energy saving air movement products that are used throughout the world. With multi-scroll compressors and non –ozone depleting refrigerant R410A, the chillers achieve an average daily COP of 4.2, with energy savings of up to 35% considerably reducing running costs and meeting the new EC directive for energy efficient ratios.

These chillers when designed into the system constantly monitor the ambient temperature, so once this falls below the chilled water temperature, free cooling is activated, even when the ambient temperature rises, the unit will only introduce single compressors initially giving simultaneous operation. Depending on the season, October through to March generates maximum effect; substantial energy savings and running costs can be achieved.
