In preparation for the arrival of a fleet of the new A380 superjumbo aircraft, Frankfurt International Airport is undergoing massive expansion, and Fläkt Woods has been awarded €2 million contract to supply air handling units on the scheme.

Europe's second biggest airport is mid way through a programmed development, which sees the owners, Fraport A.G. spending altogether €3.3 billion on a new runway, a third terminal, and an A380 maintenance base.
Working for Imtech, one of Europe’s largest contractors, Fläkt Woods is supplying 22 EU air handling units featuring their Econet energy recovery system. These will be used to climate a new building at the airport, known locally as the "CD-Link". It links the old Terminal 1 Gate C and the new Terminal 2 Gate D.

The new structures will support the arrival of the A380 aircraft. Several new business and senator lounges (Iberia and Air France) will also be constructed and these gates will be open in the spring of 2008
Fläkt Woods modular air handling units offer full flexibility allowing different sizes and functions to be combined to meet virtually any air handling requirement. The EU range supplied for the contract, sized between 21 to 84, provide functionality with a high degree of flexibility.
Under the contract Fläkt Woods is also responsible for the installation of all the water piping. Additionally the equipment has been fitted active carbon filters (a total of 3700 carbon filter tubes) ensuring ultimate air quality.
Econet
All of the air handling units will feature Fläkt Woods’ upgraded Econet® energy recovery system, incorporating changes that have made it 70-75% efficient (50% more efficient than plate heat exchangers) and more versatile than any other HVAC system currently available.

Econet integrates energy recovery, heating and cooling into one set of coils, so components, such as heating/cooling coils, pumps, valves, piping and insulation, are no longer required.
Advanced Econet also optimizes the energy recovery using a new pre programmed control system, which constantly ensures the minimum amount of energy is used to meet the air requirements.
Econet is supplied with a prefabricate pump unit. All necessary components for optimising the energy recovery as pump, frequency inverter, controls and necessary valves and sensors are included. This reduces installation time, saving both time and money.
In the future, Frankfurt will be the home base of Europe's largest fleet of Airbus superjumbos. Lufthansa, the airport’s main customer, has ordered a total of 15 new A380s. Construction of the new maintenance base for the carrier's fleet of new A380s is currently underway at the southern side of the airport.
By 2015, the new runway, and all the other improvements will mean the airport will be able to serve well over 80 million passengers per year and about 2.8t of air cargo.
