On April 23rd, the Members of the European Parliament (MEP) voted in favour for the European Commissions proposed recast and further strengthening of the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2002/91/EC).

The Parliament also amended the Commissions proposal to include a requirement that by 31 December 2018, all buildings should be “zero energy type”, meaning that they produce as much energy as they consume on-site, e.g. via solar panels or heat pumps.

“To reach this target, it is critical to reduce the primary energy used in buildings. High efficiency indoor climate systems, such as the Fläkt Woods eQ air handling unit with its wide range of energy recovery systems will play an important role to increase energy performance in buildings”, says Jean-Philippe Margrita, Fläkt Woods SVP Marketing & Product Development.

The MEPs also want “smart” energy meters to be installed in all new buildings, and all existing buildings when they undergo a major renovation. Smart meters should measure both how much, and at what time of the day, energy is consumed.

“Measuring energy consumption is the first step to start improvement and optimisation of energy performance in buildings. To support our customers energy efficiency measures, we have implemented an integrated control system with electrical energy metering in our eQ air handling units”, says Mr. Margrita.

Considering the fact that buildings represent approximately 40% of the total energy consumption in the European Union, it is clear that the Directive is a powerful tool to reach the European Unions targets on energy efficiency and reducing its CO2-emissions.

“Fläkt Woods e3 initiative with focus on the development and promotion of energy efficient indoor climate systems provides a healthy indoor climate and contributes to the reduction of energy consumption in buildings. We therefore welcome this next step towards a sustainable future”, concludes Jean-Philippe Margrita.
