Fläkt Woods has won orders to supply all the ventilation sets to match the precise air needs for the internal areas of the new Astute class submarines.
At 318ft long and weighing 7,200 tonnes, the first of three striking looking new Astute class vessels, clad in jet-black acoustic tiles, was recently launched in Barrow-in-Furness by BAE Systems.
Fläkt Woods completed the manufacture of the final ventilation set for the nuclear powered vessel at its state of the art MOD facility in Colchester, and has supplied over 30 fans for each of the three submarines. Fans include centrifugals and axials with diameters ranging from 7.6 cm to 1422 cm.
Because of the extremely confined space of the craft, ease of installation was a paramount requirement for Fläkt Woods designers to analyse, their experience was also tested to create fans that were able to meet unparalleled requirements for low noise and vibration levels.
At 97 metres long, and crewed by 98, HMS Astute is the most powerful attack submarine ever produced for the Royal Navy. The nuclear reactor will never have to be re-fuelled for its 25-year life span.
