Freedom of the Seas
Fläkt Woods has secured a substantial contract to provide ventilation fans and auxiliaries for what will be the world’s largest cruise liner, the Freedom of the Seas.
The Colchester factory has won the contract with Royal Caribbean International to supply 55 of it’s world renowned JM aerofoil fans. The fans are typically installed to serve in the engine room, drive gear rooms, electrical rooms, and other functional service applications. The project is the factory’s 7th ship set.

Attributing the contract success to the product’s reliability, Martyn Pitcher of Fläkt Woods said “Owners need reliability and cannot afford failures. We use a highly reliable electrical drive motor, and our proven impeller and blade design provides longevity,”
For this project, the factory has also fitted bearing monitoring equipment as maintenance issues are high on the agenda for cruise operators.
The vessels
Freedom of the Seas is the first of two Ultra Voyager class vessels, currently under construction at the Aker Finnyards Turku shipyard in Finland for Royal Caribbean International. When it enters service in April 2006, the 158,000 GRT vessel will be the world’s largest cruise vessel. The 339-metre-long vessel will carry 3,600 passengers on 15 passenger decks. It is being built on the line’s popular Voyager-class ships, including such signature features as the Royal Promenade, a rock-climbing wall and an ice-skating rink. It will include new features, which Royal Caribbean will reveal as the vessel takes shape at the shipyard. The craft will sail year round on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami.
