All Energy Recovery Wheels Were Not Created Equal.
The EXCLU-SIEVE® retrofit system is a modular, all-aluminum, total energy recovery system that has been specifically designed to replace existing inefficient or inoperative “heat wheels.”
Early heat wheel designs were plagued by design problems. Some utilized a mesh media which plugged quickly and reduced system airflow. Others used paper that swelled at high humidities, failed mechanically and lost their desiccant surfaces, as did the early aluminum oxide medias. Many were made from asbestos, which is now known to impose a serious health hazard. All must be replaced.
Fortunately, there are strong economic incentives for the upgrading of such systems. An EXCLU-SIEVE retrofit can provide at least $1 / scfm of outdoor air requirement in annual energy savings even in a moderate climate. For a typical elementary school with 1,000 students, an EXCLU-SIEVE retrofit can achieve $20,000 in operating cost savings while meeting the outdoor air mandates of ASHRAE Standard 62, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, at all times.
SEMCO's in-house design and installation experience with all other heat wheel systems assures a smooth running, trouble free installation. Our units are designed to provide long and reliable operation. As a statement of our commitment to quality, our wheels are available with an optional extended service contract to cover any unforeseen mechanical deficiencies or performance degradations.
With so much to be gained by an EXCLU-SIEVE retrofit, every existing heat wheel system should be carefully evaluated.
Superior Performance
EXCLU-SIEVE's unique flute geometry and desiccant surface provide higher transfer efficiencies and lower pressure losses than any other "heat wheel." This performance is independently certified in accordance with ASHRAE 84-78P and ARI 1060 recommendations. Your retrofitted system will perform more efficiently than ever before.
Patented Desiccant Surface
The patented desiccant surface excludes airborne contaminants while selectively transferring latent energy (water vapor) between the supply and exhaust airstreams. This is especially crucial for all applications where reintroduction of odors, such as toilet exhaust, is to be avoided.
Modular Media Sections
Modular media sections allow for the retrofit of existing heat wheels in the tightest of spaces. This directional flow media resists plugging, can be washed without affecting latent performance, and is protected by a corrosion resistant desiccant layer.
Light Weight Media Support
The media support members (hub, spokes and rims) are aluminum extrusions. This combines strength with precision to form the ideal sealing surface. These lightweight modular parts simplify the installation process, minimizing system down time and reducing project cost.
Variable Speed Drive System
The EXCLU-SIEVE retrofit can incorporate an optional A/C variable speed drive system with temperature controls to ensure precise, maintenance-free operation.
Factory Supervised Installation
Since most heat wheels are installed in systems serving critical areas, an efficient installation becomes as important as the quality of the equipment itself. Trained field technicians coordinate the entire retrofit project. In-house maintenance personnel are encouraged to participate in the EXCLU-SIEVE retrofit installation.
Standard Warranty
SEMCO EXCLU-SIEVE heat exchangers carry a standard limited parts warranty of 18 months from the date of shipment.
Extended Warranty
SEMCO offers an optional limited liability service contract of 18 months or 42 months that cover mechanical and performance deficiencies. For a complete description of the terms and cost of these service contracts, contact your nearest SEMCO representative.
Reduced Energy Costs
- EXCLU-SIEVE’s superior transfer efficiency reduces the amount of energy required to condition the outdoor air. Also, reduced supply and exhaust air pressure losses, associated with the new EXCLU-SIEVE media, conserves fan horsepower.
Better Environment Control
- Eliminating excessive pressure loss through the heat wheel unit increases the flow of outdoor air. Improved recovery efficiency provides cooler air during the summer, and warmer, humidified air during the winter. This extends the capacity of the existing mechanical system which reduces hot and cold “dead” spots present in your facility.
Reduced Wear on Chillers, Boilers, Pumps, and Fans
- Since EXCLU-SIEVE does most of the work, major mechanical equipment operates more efficiently under less stress and lasts longer.
More Antiseptic Environment
- Reduced pressure loss through the EXCLU-SIEVE media increases the amount of outdoor air to the space. The precision sealing surface and selective desiccant coating reduces seal leakage and minimizes cross-contamination.
Odor-Free Environment
- Increased system airflow eliminates dead spots where odors and contaminants stagnate. This is especially common in medical or research areas.
Total Energy Recovery Wheel Unit - The rotor media shall be made of aluminum, which is coated to prohibit corrosion. All media surfaces shall be coated with a non-migrating solid adsorbent layer prior to being formed into the honeycomb media structure to ensure that all surfaces are coated and that adequate latent capacity is provided. The media shall have a flame spread of less than 25 and a smoke developed of less than 50 when rated in accordance with ASTM E84.
The faces of the total energy recovery wheel shall be sealed with a two-part polymer acid resistant coating to limit surface oxidation. The media face coating shall also include a proprietary Teflon-based anti-stick additive shown, by independent testing, to effectively limit the collection of dust or smoke particulate and to aid in the surface cleaning process should cleaning be required.
The entire recovery wheel media face shall be treated with Avron46, and shall exhibit effective antimicrobial action, supported by independent test data. Any antimicrobial agent used must, by law, carry an EPA registration for use in duct systems. All desiccant surfaces within the transfer media shall also exhibit bacteria-static properties as supported by independent testing.
The desiccant shall be inorganic and specifically developed for the selective adsorption of water vapor. The desiccant shall utilize a 3A molecular sieve certified by the manufacturer to have an internal pore diameter distribution which limits adsorption to materials not larger than the critical diameter of a water molecule (2.8 angstroms).
Submit certification by a qualified independent organization documenting equal sensible and latent recovery efficiencies conducted in accordance with ASHRAE 84-78P and the results presented in accordance with ARI 1060 standards.
An independent wheel test from a credible test laboratory shall document that the desiccant material utilized does not transfer pollutants typically encountered in the indoor air environment. The cross-contamination and performance certification reports shall be provided upon written request for engineering review.
