Marmaray Rail Tunnel, Turkey

The recently opened Marmaray railway tunnel, which links Asian and European shores for the first time, has been fitted with 48 bespoke tunnel ventilation systems supplied by Fläkt Woods, including fans, attenuators, transitions and dampers.

Stretching for over 8.5 miles across Istanbul and under the Bosphorus Strait, the tunnel is the only one in the world connecting two continents and has been designed to develop important trading routes in the region. The rail service will be capable of carrying 75,000 people per hour in either direction.

Hindhead Tunnel, UK

Fläkt Woods has supplied the main ventilation in the form of 43 of their 1120mm diameter JMTS horizontally mounted smoke vent category: 250 degrees C for 2 hour type jetfans to be mounted within the road tunnels, as well as 34 JM type axial fans for the cross passage sections of the twin bore A3 Hindhead project.

The project has completed the dual carriageway link between London and Portsmouth and removed a major source of congestion, particularly around the A3/A287 traffic signal controlled crossroads. A new road is 4 miles (6.5km) long and includes the 1.2miles (1.8km) twin bored tunnels under the Devil's Punch Bowl Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Wind Tunnels, UK

Fläkt Woods, a leading global supplier of energy efficient air climate and ventilation systems, has worked closely alongside the engineers at Mercedes AMG PETRONAS on a wind tunnel project for the new building for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at Coventry University.

Fläkt Woods designed and supplied some of the key aerodynamic components, including a bespoke, specially sized high efficiency Axial Flow Fan to meet the specific requirements of the project. This was supported by extensive Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD) models to ensure that demanding flow conditions and performance levels could be met.
