Fläkt Woods’ has launched a new chilled beam, the IQ, which it is claimed will create airflow patterns that are as good as if not better than by those using a ceiling diffuser.

To achieve this, the IQ incorporates a FPC (Flow Pattern Control) function. Now for the first time in the UK,, designers and building managers have the ability to adjust the airflow pattern up to 45 degrees through built-in vanes and adjustable rails. Different directions can be achieved in sections of 600 mm in the beam.

The IQ chilled beam is available in lengths of 1.2 m, 1.8 m, 2.4 m or 3.0 m. The flow pattern can easily be adjusted and the beam is also available with one-way air distribution.

As well as cutting energy consumption, chilled beams improve comfort levels by reducing draughts and cut out the obtrusive noise and aesthetic problems associated with conventional mechanical ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Chilled beams are used in both new and refurbished buildings. Utilising well-proven technology, they are flexible, simple to install and maintain, and can provide an energy efficient, cost effective alternative to traditional cooling systems.

They work by convection, using finned elements through which water is passed at around 15°C to 18°C. Passive beams work via natural convection, while active beams offer an increased cooling capacity by using a primary air supply to cause induced convection over the elements. The primary air is then supplied to the room through diffusers built into the beam. Chilled beams can be installed flush with most false ceilings or fully exposed in aesthetic casings.
